Let’s Find the Perfect Backdrop for Your Love Story

One of the first things my couples ask me when planning their engagement session is, "Where should we take our photos?" Boise is full of beautiful, nature-rich, and versatile locations—whether you're dreaming of wildflowers in the foothills, clean editorial architecture, or that sun-drenched golden hour by the river.

I’ve photographed love stories all over Boise, and these are my Top 6 favorite spots for engagement sessions—based on light, accessibility, scenic beauty, and the kind of variety they offer. I’ve also included the best time of year to go and a few of my go-to tips for each location!

6. Boise River Greenbelt (Behind Albertson’s HQ)

Best Time to Visit: Early June – October

This hidden gem along the Boise River Greenbelt has become one of my go-to spots for couples who want a peaceful, natural backdrop with a bit of adventure. Unlike the busier stretches of the Greenbelt closer to downtown, this location offers more space, privacy, and variety, all within a short walk from the car.

You’ll find yourself right on the riverbank, surrounded by trees and nature, with access to a mix of river rock, water, and a small sandy area. It's a gorgeous spot for more intimate portraits—where couples can cuddle up on the rocks, dip their toes in the river, or explore some of the more tucked-away corners. While it’s not ideal for a lot of movement or running due to the uneven terrain, the sandy stretch makes for a great spot to loosen up and play a little.

Golden hour here is absolute magic. The trees provide just enough coverage to filter the sunlight beautifully, giving you that soft, glowing light photographers dream of. It's a spot that works well for a mix of outfits, whether you're going for cozy, casual, or dressy—just be mindful of footwear. Shoes that are easy to slip on and off and okay to get wet are ideal here.

There’s parking nearby with a short trail down to the river, but it’s worth noting that this location may not be accessible for everyone—it does require walking on uneven ground and stepping across rocks in some areas.

5. Camel’s Back Park + Hulls Gulch Trails

Best Time to Visit: April – June & Late September – Mid November

Tucked behind the well-known Camel’s Back Park is a less crowded, more natural escape into the Boise foothills. This area is a dream for engagement sessions—offering everything from tree-covered walking paths to wide open views of the hills. It’s a spot that feels adventurous yet peaceful, especially for couples who want nature-focused photos without having to drive far outside the city.

One of my favorite things about this location is the tree coverage that filters golden hour light beautifully. In the spring, everything is fresh and green, and in the fall, you get the most stunning golden and rust-colored leaves that pop against the soft, neutral trails. There’s something extra romantic about walking hand-in-hand on these winding paths while the sun glows behind you.

This spot is great for almost any outfit choice, though I usually recommend couples wear colors that stand out against the natural greens, browns, and yellows of the landscape. Whether you're going casual and cozy or a little more dressed up, this area adapts easily to your vibe. Just be sure to bring water—you’ll get more of a workout than you expect, especially if you explore a little farther up the trail.

The trails here are well maintained by the City of Boise, though it's best to avoid them right after rain to help keep them in good condition. Parking is super convenient and there are several entry points that lead to different scenic spots with just a short, easy walk.

4. Highway 21 Pull-Off (Near Hilltop Station)

Best Time to Visit: Early May – October

If you're looking for a spot that feels open, romantic, and a little bit wild, this pull-off just before Hilltop Station on Highway 21 is a hidden gem. The area opens up to rolling hills, tall grasses, and wide skies, and during early May, it absolutely explodes with bright yellow wildflowers—creating one of the most magical and colorful backdrops in the Boise area.

Depending on the day and time, it can be super quiet—perfect for an intimate session. But once those wildflowers bloom, it’s a popular place for photographers and nature lovers alike. If you want to avoid the crowds during peak season, I always recommend shooting early in the morning just after sunrise. The soft light is gorgeous, and you’ll likely have the place to yourselves. Golden hour is also beautiful here, but keep in mind that the hills block the light earlier than expected, so timing is key.

This location can give you a variety of vibes depending on the season and your styling—from rustic and warm to playful and romantic. One of my favorite sessions here had a western-inspired look, and the tall grass, greenery, and old fencing tied it all together beautifully.

It’s also one of the easiest spots to access. The parking lot is right next to the photo area (though it's not paved), and there’s minimal walking required. You can wear just about any outfit, but I’d recommend skipping the stilettos—the uneven ground is better suited for boots, sandals, or block heels. Either way, it’s the kind of spot where your style can really shine.

3. The Idaho State Capitol Building

Best Time to Visit: Anytime during the day (especially mid-day)

If you're dreaming of a session that feels elevated, editorial, and timeless, the Idaho State Capitol Building is the place to go. With its towering marble columns, grand staircases, and gold-accented elevators, this space delivers a look that’s equal parts classy and romantic. The architecture alone allows for creative composition and framing you just can't find anywhere else in Boise.

This location is ideal for couples who want to dress up and create something beyond the typical outdoor engagement photos. Think: elegant dresses, tailored suits, and a little extra glam. I love recommending black, white, or cream tones to complement the marble and keep the vibe sharp and sophisticated.

Unlike most locations, I actually prefer shooting here during mid-day, when the natural light streams through the massive windows and bounces beautifully off the marble. It gives you that bright, glowing light paired with dramatic shadows, making every photo feel dynamic and editorial. And if you’re down to get creative—the gold elevators are one of my favorite spots for fun, flash-filled shots that bring in a little extra drama.

Since it's indoors, it’s best to avoid visiting after dark—natural light is key to really making this space shine. There’s usually plenty of street parking, though most spots are metered. Pro tip: I usually park along Washington and 5th where it’s often possible to find free parking just a short walk away.

2. Arrowrock Dam & Reservoir Road

Best Time to Visit: Spring (especially early May for wildflowers)

This stretch of road leading out to Arrowrock Dam and Reservoir is one of Boise’s most underrated photo locations—and hands down one of the most scenic. As you drive through the winding hills, you’re treated to stunning views of the water, foothills, and open skies—and if you visit in early May, you’ll be greeted by a sea of blooming yellow wildflowers that blanket the landscape.

It’s a great fit for couples who are up for a little adventure. Some of the best spots do require a short hike, but there are plenty of areas with easy pull-offs and quick walks that offer gorgeous views without too much effort. Whether you're dressed in a classic jeans-and-white-tee combo or a slightly elevated outfit, this backdrop is so versatile—it complements casual and styled looks alike.

Because this area is tucked between hills, the sun dips quickly once it goes behind the ridges, so timing is everything. I recommend scheduling sessions for golden hour or just after sunrise when the light is soft and glowing, and you can really capture the colors of the landscape.

You’ll find a mix of designated parking spots and roadside pull-offs, depending on where you decide to stop. The road is smooth and easy to navigate, so no off-roading required (or recommended!). Take a little time to scout the area ahead of time or arrive early—there are so many mini locations hidden along the way, and it’s fun to find new angles for each session.

Pro tip: Skip the heels—this is a sneakers, sandals, or cute flats kind of location. The terrain can be uneven, and there’s a good chance you’ll be walking over dirt paths or wildflower-covered hills.

1. The Top of Bogus Basin (around Pioneer Lodge)

Best time to visit: Late June – Early October (winter has potential too!)

If you live in Boise and haven’t made it up to Bogus Basin… WHAT ARE YOU DOING?! Seriously—this is your sign to grab your partner, book a session, and spend an evening soaking in one of the dreamiest views Idaho has to offer (while getting some much-needed updated photos of the two of you, of course!).

My favorite photo spots are all around Pioneer Lodge at the very top of the mountain. This area gives you everything: open mountain views, peaceful forest trails, wildflowers in the summer, golden trees in the fall, and snow-covered pines in the winter. You truly get to experience all four seasons at Bogus, and that variety makes it one of my top go-to places for engagement and couples sessions.

Depending on the time of year, you can dress super casual or a little more elevated—just keep in mind you'll likely be walking through dirt paths or grassy areas, so heels are not the move here. Think comfy boots, sneakers, or stylish flats. The terrain is easy enough to manage, but most of my favorite spots do require a short walk from the car. Thankfully, there’s parking nearby and access is straightforward even if it’s your first time up there.

Golden hour is absolutely magical here. The light glows through the trees, brushes across the mountains, and adds that soft, romantic touch that looks incredible in photos. I love shooting here between late June and early October, when snow isn’t limiting access to the best areas, but even in the winter, there are still some gorgeous snowy spots you can get to—just keep ski traffic and snow gear in mind.

This location is peaceful, versatile, and stunning year-round—and honestly, every time I shoot up at Bogus, I find a new little pocket to fall in love with.
